Privacy Privacy notice
Bitcoin Years is a reading site. It has no accounts, no forms and no newsletter, and our pages set no cookies. This page explains the few places where data is handled.
Visiting this site
- No cookies, no trackers in our pages. Our pages do not set cookies, do not use browser storage, and contain no advertising or analytics scripts.
- Hosting. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and browser details when it serves a page and handles them under the Cloudflare privacy policy.
- Outside services your browser contacts. Some pages fetch live figures directly from your browser. These services then see your IP address and browser details, under their own privacy policies:

Bitcoin node addresses (World Map)
The World Map counts Bitcoin nodes that anyone can connect to. To place them, once a day an automated job on GitHub Actions downloads the public list of reachable nodes from BTC Nodes (btcnodes.io). That list contains the nodes' network addresses (IP addresses, onion and I2P addresses).
- Processed in memory only. The list is read into memory by the job. Each IPv4/IPv6 address is looked up in a copy of the DB-IP Lite database that the job downloads beforehand, so no address is sent to a geolocation service.
- Not stored. The downloaded list is not written to disk, to the code repository or to any published file. The job keeps only counts: nodes per country, per area of about 60 km, per software version and per network type. The job's cache contains only the DB-IP database files.
- Checked before publishing. Before any file is written, the job scans it for anything that looks like an IP, onion or I2P address and stops if it finds one. Error messages are cleaned the same way before they are logged. A second check scans the site's files before each release.
- Small groups are hidden. Areas and countries with fewer than 5 nodes show only the count, without software or network details, so that no single node can be singled out.
- Tor, I2P and CJDNS nodes are only counted; their addresses are never looked up.
Bitcoin ATMs
ATM locations, names, operators and opening hours come from OpenStreetMap, where volunteers publish them openly. In our written summaries we only name operators that run at least three mapped machines. To correct an entry, edit it on openstreetmap.org; our copy updates within a week.
Bitcoin addresses
The Sleeping giants pages show early Bitcoin addresses and balances. These are public records of the Bitcoin blockchain, not personal data that we collect. We do not try to link them to people.
What we keep
We keep aggregated statistics (for example the daily node count per country) for as long as the site exists. We do not keep any list of node addresses or any data about visitors.
